Blacksmiths have always been needed, at the beginning they produced objects to make everyday life and food easier. They forged knives, farming tools, horseshoes, nails and hinges for building houses. When the time of war came they forged swords and armour.
With time, Blacksmithing gained not only a practical aspect, it became an art that turned dead steel into beauty.
Once the need for hunger, survival and shelter was satisfied blacksmiths forged ornaments, decorations and sculptures – they became artists.
The city of Ivano-Frankivsk is a special place for our community of Blacksmiths, for many years an international festival of blacksmith art has been held there, giving the opportunity to meet and share this beauty and joy of burning hearths and the sound of hammers.
The artistry of both the greatest masters from around the world and novice blacksmiths could be seen in every corner of the city. Unfortunately, this year, instead of the fire of art and the sound of anvils, there was the fire of bomb explosions and the sound of guns.
The war in Ukraine has affected our friends in Ivano-Frankivsk and other cities of this beautiful country. We have to help them survive this rough time, so that we can meet together again one day and be able to create beautiful things.
In cooperation with the SLOT on the Border, of which I am the coordinator, we are raising funds to buy the most necessary things for Ukrainian blacksmiths, their families and the city of Ivano-Frankivsk.
We are in touch with Olga Polubotko, the organiser of the Smiths’ Festival, who provides us with information about current needs.
